Knee Pain...Not sure what it is.

Started developing pain in my knee on the outside below the kneecap (That soft spot just below the Patella). On long runs its noticeable for approx. 7 miles but then disappears. When I flex my knee or squat it will crack/pop but not painful.

From my research it looks like that is the area occupied by the meniscus but I not a physician.

Any thoughts/suggestions ? I just completed my first marathon and want to get ready for another. I have been running for 3 years and had a base of 20 to 30 pre-marathon training and went up tp 40 during marathon training. I have an appointment with an Ortho but of course, I have to wait 4 weeks to get in to see him.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
