I had a similar knee problem. After running my first marathon in January, with no base training. It seemed that after the marathon, whenever I would run more than 3 miles, the outside of my knee would really hurt, almost giving out. The pain is pretty much gone now, but I went to an ortho anyway. After seeing the MRI he told me that there was a little fluid in my knee, but that I just needed to stretch more and it would be ok. I've ran a few 10ks in the past month (along with 8 mile training runs) and haven't had any issues with the injury anymore. My suggestion, which I'm sure the ortho will have you do, is have an MRI done so he can see exactly what is going on.
