Thanks Jeff; your input is helpful. I ran 3:38 this October; I was *very* conservative in my pacing.
Actually, my PR was done in 1980 (3:33), but that was when sub 20 5K's were easy for me, and before I gained a huge amount of weight and quit running. Long story.
Anyway, looking at your milage, you 800's and your 3 stiff 20 mile runs gives me an excellent idea of why you succeeded! What I need to do is to build up to a similar work-load without putting myself in the hospital. :-)
