In this month's issue of Runner's World (near the back) they had an ad for a new watch that acts as a pedometer. You attach this thing to your shoelaces and it send a signal to the watch. It's just coming out and was something like $300. It'd be a bit of a risk, but if you've got money to burn and like new gadgets...
If you want to do it strickly from the map, you can do what I do - cut a string the length of the mile legend then trace the trail out mile by mile counting the number of string-lengths it takes. But this will only be as good as the map maker - oftentimes not even close!
