Neil, you might look at this years "Marathon and Beyond" series on marathon training. Several schedules are offered; each one for a given number of miles per week. Also, marathon goal times are offered, given both a 10K/half marathon time AND the number of miles a week you are training.
I tied up really badly twice; both were on warm days where I went out too fast for the weather conditions. I'd say be very conservative in the first half of your next one.
Also, have you done any marathon-pace longer runs (13-15 miles) and/or half marathon races? These really help, in my opinion. Another good marathon workout is to do a short race (say, 5K) *after* a 10-12 mile warm up.
