Doing Boston at week 12 or thereabouts of an 18 week training program has all sorts of possibilities for aggravation. Even if you are convinced that Boston is a tourist run, you will enjoy it much more if you prepare to run a marathon then.
If you choose to enjoy it as a tourist, there is no reason why it shouldn't be part of a 24 week program with your goal race at the end. 6 weeks if enough to recover from a long effort, and if your competitive instincts have grabbed you at Boston, enjoy the other as a reward for having run well.
I used to run with someone who asserted that it was silly to waste 18 weeks of training on running only one marathon. Her comparative ranking is much more elevated than mine, which may say that she is better suited to long distances, but the approach appeals anyway.
Enjoy both races and the training leading up to them.
