How to judge the distance run

I have just started running (about 2mths ago). I used to do a lot of power walking but no running. For the last couple of months I have been walk/running through the "bush" (trail running/hiking?) and have gradually progressed to being able to run for 40 minutes total.

I have no idea of how far Im now running. I just run for 40 minutes (20 minutes in one direction and then 20 minutes back again).

The trail I run through the bush is hilly with hills varying in steepness.

Today I ran for the same amount of time but ran along the edge of the road and then drove the same route in the car to get an idea of the kilometres I'd done. I ran 6.5 km - about 4 miles in 40 minutes, but this road run was fairly flat whereas trail run has many hills.

Surely you all don't do this? Is there another way of gauging the distance I cover during a run?
