As you get used to running, it will become easier to judge distances. Especially if you do some of your running on a flat area, you should be able to determine what your pace is. The more running you do on flat courses the better you will be able to figure this. As you run more you should be able to get a feel for whether you are running faster or slower than this pace and use that while you are out in unknown areas. It isn't exact, especially when hills are included, but gives you an approximation.
