I wouldn't think that gels, etc. would help because they don't really hit the bloodstream until a bit later than that, usually about 45 minutes.
Try slowing the pace a little bit and see if you get the same results. If you don't, it could just be that you are using up too much energy, reaching your limit at 20-30 minutes. Take it a little easier and see if you last a little longer.
