The busses are a drag in that you have to get up very early. I've taken private buses/limos to the start and it was ok, you sit in traffic on the bridge a bit. Last year I took a taxi to the ferry and then a bus to the start. If it's good weather, you will never forget the views of lower manhatten, statute of liberty etc.... Well worth a try. I'll be on it this year too. (remember you need $1.50 exact change for the bus on staten islan, though)
