I would choose one that is large enough to have the streets completely closed to traffic. Races such as Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and trail marathons have no auto traffic and are more enjoyable to me than the smaller races that have much of the course open to traffic. Some people don't seem to mind the cars though. And also a marathon where it is normally cool at that time of year. Again Chicago fits that description.
