Splittling Long Runs

I am training for my 1st marathon (Chicago) and I was told that it is OK to split my long runs into 2 separate runs: 10 miles in the morning, 10 miles at night. Is this true? It is hard for me to believe so, but I am not an expert. Thanks for the advise!
