It pains me, as the NYCM was my very first marathon, and I have wonderful memories of the crowds cheering in the millions. But to go forward and pull resources and public safety personnel away while some neighborhoods are still underwater and without power is the hallmark of a banana republic. It will be a shame for those who have trained for the experience, but to go ahead and flaunt the race among all this misery will only set back the image of the marathon—and all marathons. Race officials and Mayor Bloomberg: please reconsider.
