I did the towpath rely last year. It is a wonderful race! [However, I hear it rains every year. Last year was no exception.] It is a beautiful route on a cinder-like path through a national park. There's also the Marine Corp. Marathon in DC. But because I was in DC this spring I was looking for someplace new.
