I was also thinking about the Towpath marathon but it is on October 13, 2002 so that might also be a conflicted date. I have not run the Towpath marathon but it would seem to be the exact opposite of a big city race. It might be worth a try some year since it is in your area. The people who posted on the US Races page under the Marathon Directory about the Towpath said good things about it. You might like the less hectic and more quiet Towpath race. I personally like the large races since they are closed to traffic. A lot of the smaller races run on city streets are open to traffic and it takes away much of the enjoyment of the race.
