If you don't get in New York, perhaps you would like the Chicago marathon or a less jammed Columbus marathon. Both are excellent choices and are run close to the same date as the New York marathon. Both courses are completely closed to automobile traffic. I've not been to New York but it would seem that it could get very expensive if you're staying a couple nights at a hotel. Here's hoping you become a life-long distance runner and marathon participant.
