I'm a little late posting on this thread, and it seems like the BB has dried up for the summer, but I'll post my .02 anyway.

Even in the shorter races, endurance is as important as speed. It sounds like you are someone who normally races at shorter distances. That would indicate that you have done a substancial amount of speedwork in the past. The combination of this speed component, with the newly added endurance component is to take the credit for your success. If you take a look at world class runners of all distances (even shorter than mile racers) they log substancial weekly miles to improve the endurance component of their running. 5000m, 10000m, half marathon racers all typically put in 100+ mile weeks in training.
