It's possible that sizing up (half or full) would help keep you from losing toenails. On the other hand, downhill marathons seem to cause me to damage at least one toenail, usually the second littlest toe on my left foot. So it might be shoe model design. I figure one toenail isn't such a big deal. I know runners who just pull them off (yuck). I also know runners who use injinji socks, but they require more room in the toe box so folks who use them alternately with regular socks seem to have two different models of shoes.
