Long training runs

I have read conflicting information on whether one should actually run a 26 mile training run while preparing for a full marathon. I am 55 years old, never run in my life and just started training in January of this year. I ran a 20 mile run this past saturday and wonder if anyone has input as to whether its worth running longer, or am I running too long and just wearing myself out? I've been doing the longer runs about every three weeks. 16, 19, 20 miles. I've signed up for a marathon in late Sept. Also doing a half marathon at the end of July. Hopefully running will be part of my life the rest of whatever I have left!
