As cliche as it sounds... Steve 2/5/12 5:29:51 AM ET
When I aggravated my IT band a few years ago, I found that icing the heck out of it (ice massaged with water frozen in Dixie cups—just peeled the cup and massaged while sitting on a towel) worked well, in conjunction with regular Advil. I was extremely vigilant with my ibuprofin and I iced massaged the knee four times a day for 15 minutes each time (every four hours or so). I did this relentlessly for two weeks. A trainer once told me that the icing relieves the minor irritation/ wear and tear that might occur from just walking/sitting/etc., and when the inflamed knee warms up, the blood returns in greater abundance than if you had not iced. Sounds counter-intuitive to me, but I did it and noticed a huge relief after a week. Anything that required me to bend my knee (Cycling, etc.) hurt, so I gave myself a two-week no exercise mandate. Started WAY slower than I thought I should when I started back in...Hope this helps.
