Now we are back on the same page re: salaries, etc.
They can get the free labor becuase of the guaranteed NYCM option that one must volunteer for a race and run 9 NYRR races to get guaranteed entry to the marathon. They added the volunteer portion of it a few years back. So now they have hoards of people "volunteering" due to their obsessiveness to get into the marathon.
To add to this mentality - Saturday's Manhattan Half-Marathon (only $25 actually!) was changed to a non-scored, non-timed fun run due to the snow. A smart decision due to the conditions. I was signed up for it, but decided to do my 13 earlier in the mornning since I was up. NYRR announced that anyone who signed up but did not run would still get "credit" for their 9 races. You should have seen their facebook page and how excited people were that they would still get "credit" and not have to run it. They didn't even care about the actual run, just that they got their "credit". I was bummed solely because I wanted to semi race a half in preparation for Boston, not for some "credit". Just shows the mentality of some and how NYRR gets away with what they do.
