Lifting weights

What do people think about lifting weights - especially lower body while training for a marathon? I have never done it for fear of getting big (and therefore heavier legs). I have run 8 marathons and I my legs still just get so tired at the end - wondering if lifting would help. (And yes I know they should be tired.) Thanks
