Z is spot-on. There are many reasons for their drop: it IS a commercial machine and less of a sporting event. Prices are reaching skyward with no end in sight and really with no merit. There is the dilution factor as well; there are simply more and more races to choose from. Many are also trading down to the half distance instead of running the full. Their websites are hard to navigate. Those that run the full are overlooked at the race itself as the focus has shifted to the larger pool of half runners. Their collection of races have uneven accolades—some do run well while others have major operational issues—a symptom of growing their brand without taking care of the ones they already have. While they ask for feedback and/or see what's written on blogs, it appears most of the reviews and hiccups are ignored. I like that they attract newbies to the sport—but it is a SPORT—not a party. It's time to treat their races as an athletic endeavor or as Zeke says—the masses are moving on to better-staged and value- priced alternatives.
