I am certain that the IAAF had to take Boston into consideration, since Boston is the oldest established marathon, when they were establishing criteria for marathon courses that would qualify for World Record recognition.
There is a high probability, because of the difficulty level and historical clock times posted at Boston, that the IAAF never expected that they would never have to deal with the validity problem that they face now.
It will be interesting to watch the outcome of the BAA appeal to the IAAF.
There are many issues at stake.
