When the IAAF set out to establish "World Record" criteria for road races they decided that point-to- point layouts would not qualify. At that time, the Boston Marathon asked to be grandfathered because history tells us the course is NOT as fast as Rotterdam, London, Chicago, or Berlin — marathons that all meet IAAF criteria. The last time a men's World Best was set in Boston was 1947!!! That fact speaks volumes.
On a personal note, I have run both Boston and Chicago. There is no comparison — Boston is a more challenging course.
