It might be a good idea to fit in a 5K and a 10K before the fall... plenty of time to find them. It will help you to decide if you REALLY like the racing part of the sport. The shorter distances, especially 5K can be done will much less training and will help you focus on learning the ins and outs of the sport before dong a longer race. Better to find out which socks work well (not cotton) and how to drink out of little paper cups(fold them first), where to pin the number (front) and other things on a shorter & usually less expensive event. They all have there strong points and you may find you like the shorter distances. Plus when your kid gets to be about four you can do 5Ks together, but be prepared to work hard to keep up, as kids seem to FLY at that age!
