Have I mislead you (English is not my first language, sometimes I am not well understood)? I know perfectly why I am doing this, and I know why I have to 'retire' (don't rub it in!). This is such a hard game to play but I think I have a pretty good grip on things (it's just that the 'wheels' will no longer cooperate, it's a drag but a relief that I should have been forewarned). Having already stood on the start line at Hopkinton - and I thought then that I was there undeservingly but the race later said that I belonged - I know that next week I could get into a good race or that I could set myself up for a rather humbling experience, and that is I it should be.
In a short story I wrote I suggest that every race has a soul of its own and it's the runner's duty to probe it, tame it, understand it, let success come through it. It's only a story but I believe it: a racing course is a 'wild' animal and only the wise and the generous will make an ally of it... (I say this way now but in the story it's really about a runner trying to get into another runner's life and shorts...)
Thank you for your good wishes, and good luck to you too (will you be at the pasta dinner?).
But just one last question: why are you all giving Observer a bad time in the Main BB? She can come here, in Voodoo land, anytime.
