I've seen the Hal Higdon 18 week program, but haven't seen the other you mention. I might have to look it up, where'd you find it? I personnally follow the Jack Daniels program. It's a bit longer than 18 weeks but you can easily tailor it. He outlines it in his book "The Running Formula". I think at one time he also had one in Runner's World. Whatever program you select or if you make one up yourself, the most important part will be the distance runs. I recommend building your weekly long run by about 1 to 1 1/2 miles per week. Once you hit 18 miles, space your long runs at least 10 days apart (every 2 weeks is good but it may be a bit tight to build to your desired max distance in 18 weeks that way). For your first marathon, and considering you sound like a pretty good runner, I'd consider building to at least 20. Your longest run should be about 3 weeks prior to the marathon, then start tapering. At least 6 weeks prior to the marathon you should seek out a half marathon to try. It'll be a good learning experience and be a good stepping stone to the marathon. Hope this helps a little...
