Agree with Zeke—charity others do have their place—even in Boston. I've run almost 60 marathons and have raised about $27,000 at two different marathons—one being Boston. With the requisite shirt, we were cheered beginning to end. Aside from a very few fans in the know, the everyday race watcher is screaming and cheering 'Go (fill in the blank)' you're awesome, etc. for the Joe/Jane average runner or charity runner. And those runners still have to traverse 26.2. Are they the fastest? Mostly no, but they make up for it with passion and with their ability to raise funds and awareness for their cause. Speedy-types and the rest of us seem to co-exist without challenge.
