I understand to make the standard more competitive to keep the prestige of the race. One bummer though, one of the best feelings is to cross the finish line knowing that you've just qualified for Boston for the first time. Now, you won't know that for sure until Sept 28th. It takes some of the excitement out of the finish for a 2012 first time qualifier. Ultimatley, it makes me happy to see that the numbers have gotten so big...more people in the sport. Tougher standards will keep the race as an ultimate goal instead of just another marathon.
