Reassess your game plan. Chill on the marathon for now. Become a runner first and foremost. Determine if you even have a passion and/or aptitude for distance running. This is essential. Additionally, runners over 45 —especially those new to training— have to be very careful about courting setbacks due to injury.
My advice: Enter a 10K race. After that, a half- marathon. Then assess from there. Not everyone's suited for the marathon, and if that's true in your case it's not a character flaw at all.
