OK first, the "amazed" at a balmy -9 is just BEYOND......yikes. I hope Calgary is BEE-YOO-TEE-FUL b/c that would do me in :-) I would be a little shivering pile of ice. :-)
The race goes over the Golden Gate Bridge, in San Francisco. So, it's an "A to B" race. It is funny b/c it used to be from one bar in Marin County (the "anchor" county of the bridge), over to its "sister bar" in San Francisco. That is why it's been called the "Houlihan's to Houlihan's" run. But now, Houlihan's is no longer in existence -- tho they are still doing the run. It is going to be the first "event" to go over the Bridge since 9/11 -- they got a special "sunset" to the provisions that no events could use the bridge, etc. so that the race could be run. It's in its 19th year and benefits something locally -- not sure -- I do know that it's dedicated to a guy who had run all the previous runs but died on one of the airplanes in the 9/11 incident.
I did smile, WannaBe, re the "can I take the same route back." Well, I sure hope so. Otherwise, there is some serious swimmin' I'm gunna be doin', my friend :-)))))
I have a little problem tho -- and it's bumming me out. I have a pain on the outside of my ankle. Sort of a "shin splint-y" feeling, but I woke up with it -- and only WALKED yesterday. So I have no idea where this is "from." I'm not very happy about it. We'll see, I'm supposed to run tonite and then go to the driving range and hit some balls with a friend. (Swam this morning.) I might forego the run -- which would be a bummer -- but I think it might be the smartest thing to do, considering.
It's supposed to be pouring this weekend. My running buddies are "fair weather" runners so if it does, I will be doing the race alone! :-( They don't allow dogs, so I am also going to be testing out my "techniques" wrt carrying enough GU and little Accellerade "packs" to sustain me. (If it doesn't rain, so my boyfriend runs it with me, I have to carry for the 2 of us -- if I can do that, I can carry for the marathon I figure)
Best, me
