Slower for Long runs?

So why do some say to do long runs slower (a minute or two slower) than race pace? On one hand I see it as a way to "be on your feet" longer in training, but I also want to see if I can keep up the pace for long runs and not get used to a slower pace. I just did my 5th marathon (Shamrock) and was happy with my time — 3:53 — but think I could do better. I did most long runs at pace but did my 20 miler slower for the first ten and picked it up for the back ten. Planning another marathon so thought I would ask. Any thoughts or advice would be great.
