I wouldn't take Frontrunner's comments too bad. I hear what he is saying..in the old days the marathon used to be mostly a race; folks entered knowing that they could finish; they were interested in their times. Example: in 1980, I ran the Maryland Marathon in 3:33 and was about the median runner. My buddy took 50'th out of 2000 with a 2:38.
Now-a-days, the large marathons are more or less events with some people taking it as an "urban hike" and others running it full tilt; the rest of us in between. Things aren't the same.
That doesn't mean that things are worse; but they are different.
