I completed my second marathon ever on Saturday. The National Marathon in DC. My first marathon was Philly in November and I BQ'd. This race I actually felt much better the first half - less cramping, no leg soreness, and I was careful to take the first few miles slow. One thing was that this course DID NOT have enough water - several stations, especially in the beginning, I had to forego getting water because there was none or they were still filling the cups. I picked up pace after the 10K mark and maintained it until the 20 mile mark. I finished Philly running hard/fast and feeling like I had more. This marathon, even though my legs felt fine, I had nothing left. It was warmer than Philly but I run in the heat alot and don't mind it. Miles 22-26 were FULLY of hills and inclines. But I had done lots of hills in my training. All this to say, I finished in 3:49:25 - 9 minutes slower than Philly! I feel very disappointed and discouraged. I don't feel as sore or tired as I did after Philly. I rest Sunday, walked yesterday, and walked today plus ran 1 slow mile. Tomorrow I will try a 5-6 mile run. Did I just get lazy and not push hard enough in DC? Did I not train well enough? Was it the difference in course? 9 minutes seems ALOT slower to me. I didn't like not finishing strong and feeling like I just couldn't wait to be done. Any thoughts from the more experienced runners out there? I'm doing Boston next April and would like to train for marathon this Fall.
