Are you working off a training schedule? If so follow that. I've done both three and two week tapers and found that if I am taking care of myself (sleeping, eating well and not stressed) that I can get by with a two week taper. That means I can run my last 20 two weeks before a marathon. Some people cannot do this, especially if they are running lots of miles per week. This winter lots of people I know are running less than they had planned... most are also planning on running their marathons slower because of this. Everyone is an 'experiment of one' be careful with changing plans at the last minute or be bold... it might work if you slow the 20 mile run down.
