Help Shin Splints

Started running a year ago and trained for a 10k. Took a couple months off and then started running a couple miles a week. Just started training for my first marathon last week and was only able to run 11 of the 19 miles in the program. I've been only able to run 2 miles this week because of the shin splints. Any advice on what I should do? Should I be running through the pain or how long should I take off? I was thinking about running on a elliptical for 5 days and running outside on the 6 day for my long runs. It's it possible for me to still finish a marathon with problems this early on in the training? Any help would be greatly appreciated
