Well, there are people who rely on music to get them out the door (or to improve their enjoyment of distance running), and there are people who find music to be distracting during a workout (if not a safety hazard)
My personal story: I try to log most miles on trails whenever possible, and much prefer the serenity afforded to me by Mother Nature. It's my time to disconnect from a technological world that has become relentless and pervasive. Thus, come race day, I have no inclination to wear earbuds. Not once.
Bottom line: just do what works for you. That's all that matters.
