Vicki- I think nutritional intake varies all over the map depending on the runner. Experiment with different things on your moderate and long runs to see what works for you. Shot Blox, GU, Power Gel and the like are all conveniently packaged and well-proven. Personally, I've completed many marathons taking none of those and felt fine. Depends on you and the day. (Would not recommend beer, no matter how good it looks. Wait till after.)
