Hi everyone,
I'm currently training for my first marathon (the Glass City Marathon in Toledo Ohio on April 25th) and I have a couple questions for all you experience marathoners.
What is the best way to get nutrition during long runs and the marathon? I've used Gu packs for cycling before, but never for running, so I'm not sure how often I should be using them during a long run and what else I should supplement them with. A Gu every hour?
Next, a question I'm sure is posed a lot - is a 20 mile long run really the longest I need to run before my first marathon? I'm following the Hal Higdon beginner plan, which gradually increases mileage for 2 weeks and then steps back a week, and as in most beginner plans the longest run is a 20 miler. I've been a runner for about half my life and have also participated in other endurance sports (triathlon and cycling), but the fact that the marathon will be 6 miles longer than my longest run ever is creating a bit of a mental block for me. Any thoughts? (also, I was up to a 13 mile long run last week and so far haven't had any issues with the mileage, only the cold weather!)
