I make sure I'm okay (nutrition wise) before the start (it's trickier with early morning starts, but if you have to, get up real early).
During the race I use a Powergel at every 10 K (so you need to carry 3 of those and they're inconvenient, no matter if they're an improvement over bars).
I drink water throughout, but will drink sportsdrinks after the 30K mark.
If you're lucky, they'll have orange quarters : go for it!
The trick is to experiment - and learn how to use those gels. They are really the best (obviously having friends with food, bananas and the like, at various spots along the course would be ideal, but who can arrange that?).
I don't think you can feel hunger during a marathon but you have to tkae in some nutrients (although, in the old days, I hear, people would not eat, even drinking water was considered the sissy thing to do...)
