Like Rita said, a treadmill is not ideal, but is sometimes necessary. I did a good amount of training for my first marathon over the winter months on a treadmill. I did some inside track running and outside running once the weather got nicer. The treadmill was definitely the easiest since there are no variables like wind, terrain, obstacles etc. If the treadmill is programmable, having it change incline and speed here and there will help condition you and reduce the boredom factor.
