From Obese to a Runner?

I have never been an athlete. I've always been obese and great at dreaming about changing my lifestyle but not good at actually doing it. July of this year I decided that I would train to run a marathon in 2011. I just completed my first 5k on Thanksgiving with a time of 51:10 (walking/jogging) and am looking forward to getting better and faster with more races and training.

Is there anyone else out there in the marathon world who was obese but is a runner now? I'm working hard, but I need to know that there are others who have been able to concur this giant - actually completing a 10k, Half and Full Marathon. If so, how did you do it? Where you apart of a training group? Did you just run every day? Did you read everything that you could find about running and just try it out? Actually, those questions can be answered by any experienced runner.

I'm really trying, but want to know that this is attainable goal and not another unrealistic desire.
