I've been trying to follow the Galloway method of building up the long run using walking breaks. My last long run was 21 miles. I finished it fine (althought tired) and recovered faily well. The problem is it took my 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete! I purposely went the recommended two miles/minute slower. My question: is there an optimal pace vs. time? It seems to me that a slightly quicker pace would result in less time out running. I'm thinking about how long it is going to take me to do the 26-27 mile long run. At the pace I went it will take me 5 hours and 15 minutes! Doesn't it make sense that a long run that takes say 4 hours and 45 minutes would be less taxing than a run that takes 30 minutes longer? At what point does the time spent running have a greater affect than the pace of the run on recovery?
