Here is what is wrong with perceived effort

...in my opinion (which is worth every bit of $$ that you are paying for it :-) )

Earlier this summer I did a 1500 m judged racewalk. I was in quite a bit of pain by 800 m!!!! I hurt every bit as bad as I did when I ran mile races.

But I wasn't running (at least the judges didn't think so ;-) ); I didn't have a flight phase and my landing leg had a straight (unbent) knee.

Or look at this another way. When I've done trail ultras, late in the race (or the last 10K of a marathon after I had crashed) I was expending a great deal of effort. But there is no way anyone would call my forward motion at that time "running"; mostly I was doing some cross between a bent kneed walk and a jog (slog???)

On the other hand, I sometimes conclude a running workout with "strides". These are indeed runs; albeit very short ones. I don't expend much effort there.
