Well, I just completed my 18th marathon in Philly and was disappointed with my performance (3:29:06). My last marathon in May of this year in Pocono Marathon was a P.R. of 3:17:53. I'm 49 years old and have been running for 10 years (2 marathons per year since 2005). This year I ran more miles than I ever did before (right now at 1900 miles for 2011). My last PR in May I averaged 55 miles per week for the last 12 weeks just before tapering. This training I averaged about 53 miles per week for 10 weeks prior to the taper. I did a mixture of various pacings weekly (V02 Max, Tempo and cruise, marathon pace and long runs). If I didn't PR on my last marathon, I would just give in to age and say that I can't get any better. But I don't feel like I've had my perfect (or near perfect) race yet. In 2006, I did a modified FIRST plan, running 3 days per week, so I've basically tried practically every training plan that I know (Pfitz, Daniels A, Hudson, etc.) So where do I go from here? Racing 5k's and 10k's to build speed (PR in 5K 19:55 in 2010)? Even more miles? Long runs greater than 3 hours? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
