Training in the summer in Texas is a challenge. There are a few things you can do to make it through the summer and still continue to train. The first is to make sure you run with water or your sports drink of choice. This will help you learn how to drink on the run as well as helping your body deal with the conditions.
The other thing to do, if it suits your schedule and you have a safe place to run after dark, is to do your training in the evenings or early mornings. That is a lot easier on your body than running at 6pm or even at 8am.
Another thing you should do is check out some of the running clubs in your area. Training with a group can make it easier to get out of bed and go put in 12-15 miles on a Saturday morning.
Taking a year to get ready is not a bad plan either. I tried to get ready too quickly on my first attempt and had to shut it down after about 7 months of training. The Texas marathon season runs from about October to March/April so you might try a half marathon in the spring to reward yourself for your training. Good luck with your training.
