Slow running?

Is it important to do slow runs and why? I recently ran a half-marathon after starting from scratch and only running for 12 weeks. I ran it in 1:43:36 which is 7:55 a mile pace. I've read where my longer runs should be 1 minute to 1 minute 30 slower than race pace, but I find this very hard to do. Part of it is when I get out to run longer I'm ready to get through it and get it over. My slower runs tend to only be about 25 seconds slower than race pace. It feels comfortable for the most part, but am I doing harm by not running slower. Thanks for input.
