Hmmm. Very interesting. I wonder how your friend would explain the likes of Sister Marion Irvine? Irvine didn't even start running until age 47. Before that, she was an overweight parochial school principal who smoked two packs a day.
She started out half-running and half-walking, and within a few years qualified for the 1984 US Olympic Trials — running 2:51 at age 54.
