If you combine the Hal Higdon Spring Training program with his Novice marathon plan I think it adds up to 30 weeks. You can probably make it, especially if your finishing time is not critical to you.
As for the Ipods, you see plenty of them in use even though they are "illegal." I really enjoyed the crowds and entertainment along the way during my first marathon. I'm not sure I would have soaked up as much of the atmosphere if I'd been wearing an Ipod. Running that race should feel like a reward for all of the miles you're going to put in between now and then.
